Long term food storage is a great way to prepare for emergencies such as earthquakes. According to FEMA – Federal Emergency Management Agency, you should have enough food stored that would last for three days, including water. However, survival experts usually recommend food provisions that will accommodate a prolonged amount of time and the worst-case scenarios. In essence, you should have enough to last for at least two weeks.
The Planning Phase
Map out a place for your extended food storage. Choose a dark, dry and cool area. In this case, garages, closets and even basements are good locations for long term food storage. Then, determine the exact size of your storage space and what it can hold before starting to store.
The next phase of your planning is to earmark sections for different items. In essence, determine the best space for water storage, cans and boxes of foods. If needed, install a shelf to help create more storage sections. Remember to create easy access to each section.
Choosing Items to Store
Start with the most essential. In this case, water would usually come first. As you probably know, humans can go on without food for weeks, but they can only survive a few days without water. According to FEMA’s recommendation, you should set aside a gallon for each individual per day. This definitely would take a lot of space. A great idea to help limit the quantity of water you need to store is to stockpile tablets for purifying water, as well as other water purifying agents.
When it comes to food, start with carbohydrates since it will help supply enough calories to sustain the family in an emergency situation. Store enough grains such as rice and pasta. Carbohydrates should take up to 60 percent of the food storage space. Then, store assorted canned and dried foods.
