You can take your time and create easy to use ones far less expensive and better than you would when there’s a storm impending. People in the north, particularly those who lose utilities during freezing weather, need to have a source of heat for those times and create a plan of action. Whatever is the most imminent danger in your area, should be dealt with first.

Even if you have a cook stove, lantern and loads of camping gear, do you know where everything is? Getting organized so you and your family members can go directly to the area where the disaster management items are stored is important. Organizing food and insuring it isn’t past the expiration date is another “must do” item on the list. Where ever you decide to store the food, have a system where you rotate out food products as they approach the use by date. That way, you’ll always be guaranteed to have fresh supplies when you need them. Once you have a stash, the cost is limited, since you’ll only be replacing older food you’ll be using. If you’ve ever witnessed or been part of the run on the stores when inclement weather threatened, you’ll notice how chaotic it is. You will never have to do that again when you plan ahead.
